RetroVision Media Recommends Standing Clear
Through a myriad of mental musings, the Coffee Cup Theatre Company’s production of Standing Clear managed to find the humor hidden deep with the recesses of the NYC straphanger. Opening at the Access Theater this Monday past, co-writers Ishah Janssen-Faith and Jack McGowan’s hot/humid comedy brought back all the reasons this writer left the iron horse for an air-conditioned horseless carriage.
Spectating from the safety of a theater seat, Janssen-Faith/McGowan allows their audience to peak behind the dark glasses of the strangers on the train. We get to eavesdrop on private conversations of conflict that make our own lives appear almost normal. We get to see reunions that should never have happened. We get to see love affairs real and imagined. We get to see lives passing one another day and night doing all they can to avoid acknowledging each other’s existence.
Think of it, for a mere $2.00, we are treated to a never-ending underground traveling circus. Standing Clear could be a comedic travel guide and or advisory for those visiting our fare city looking for a cheap thrill ride.
Replete with all the freaks, lonely soles, bump and rub artist, mashers, and transgender hotties, director Barbara Karger and set designer Kina Park brought the illusion of the NYC Subway system right into your lap highlighting the painfully weird as well as the miserably mundane.
Standing Clear gives adventure seekers a reason to chance the third rail for more than just saving a buck or ten on gas, as this tale waist precious little time on the usual assortment of everyday bland commuters just trying to make his/her way home as uneventfully as possible. This play is every rider’s hilarious horror story of what happened on the train today.
